You Heard It Right, Google Wallet Has Arrived!

From Editor on Thursday 2nd June 2011

In yet another manoeuvre in their on-going struggle with Apple for world domination, Google have now taken over your wallet!

Rumours have been rife for the past few months, but last week, Google unveiled their plans to incorporate your wallet into your phone, by introducing an app which will make paying for goods over the counter even easier than with a credit card.

According to Google online; “It’s aimed at making it easier for you to pay for and save on the goods you want, while giving merchants more ways to offer coupons and loyalty programs to customers, as well as bridging the gap between online and offline commerce.”

The new mobile app, will incorporate and store all your credit cards, offers, loyalty cards and gift cards, but without all the bulk.

The idea is that when you ‘tap to pay’, your phone will also automatically redeem offers and earn loyalty points for you. In the long run, even things like boarding passes, tickets, ID and keys could be stored in your phone, and Google Wallet is definitely the first step towards this.

At first, Google Wallet will support both Citi MasterCard and a Google Prepaid Card, which you will be able to fund with almost any payment card.

At any checkout where the ‘paypass’ is accepted, you’ll be able to tap your phone, and hey presto, your item is paid for!
