The Good News Times Sunday Rich-List

From Editor@GoodNewsTimes on Sunday 29th May 2011

Where do you come among the six billion people on the planet??

To find out, read on…

The Global Rich List, a campaign by POKE London, allows you to see where you come among the rest of the world’s population in terms of income.

According to Poke, ‘we are obsessed with wealth. But we gauge how rich we are by looking upwards at those who have more than us. This makes us feel poor.

‘We wanted to do something which would help people understand, in real terms, where they stand globally. And make us realise that in fact most of us (who are able to view this web page) are in the privileged minority.’

Based on figures from the World Bank Development Research Group, The Global Rich List calculates the most accurate position for each individual by assuming that the world’s total population is 6 billion and the average worldwide annual income is $5,000. These figures are backed up by the 2003 world population Data Sheet of the Population Reference Bureau and Steven Mosher, president of the population research institute, CNN.

Once you have calculated how wealthy you are against the rest of the planet, the site then shows you how much of your wealth it would take to make a difference to those below you. For example, it tells you that $8 could buy you 15 organic apples OR 25 fruit trees for farmers in Honduras to grow and sell fruit at their local market.

‘We want people to feel rich. And give some of their extra money to a worthwhile charity.’
