Kiva: Empowering People around the World

From Ken from Waterford on Tuesday 17th May 2011

Kiva, a non-profit organization are on a mission to connect people through lending in an effort to alleviate poverty worldwide!

Founded in April 2004 by Matt Flannery & Jessica Jackley , so far Kiva have loaned $212 million to small businesses in 60 different countries throughout the world with a repayment rate of 98.71% through donations by 581,461 good people.

Kiva’s Mission:-

Kiva’s mission is to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Leveraging the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, Kiva lets individuals lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world.

How it works:-

Kiva works with microfinance institutions on five continents to provide loans to people without access to traditional banking systems. One hundred percent of all loans donated through the site is sent to these microfinance institutions, who administer the loans in the field.

The money raised to fund this is donated through their site – – where visitors can lend $25 with the simple click of a button.

Why they do it:-

Kiva envisions a world where all people – even in the most remote areas of the globe – hold the power to create opportunity for themselves and others.

They believe providing safe, affordable access to capital to those in need helps people create better lives for themselves and their families.

How they’re funded:-

100% of every dollar you lend on Kiva goes directly towards funding loans; Kiva does not take a cut. Furthermore, Kiva does not charge interest to our Field Partners, who administer the loans.
Sponsor a business through Kiva today. You won’t make any money on your investment, but boy will it make you feel good!
