Basic (maternal!) Instinct

From Deirdre on Friday 27th May 2011

It’s a common belief that there is no love like a mother’s love, but this week one dog proves how far that love and maternal instinct can go- it can even transcend barriers of species!

Four liger cubs- a cross between a male lion and a female tiger- were born at Xixiakou Wildlife Zoo, in Weihai, eastern China earlier this month.

Ligers are extremely rare and are only born in captivity.

The mother tiger rejected the cubs and stopped feeding them. Only two survived.

Fortunately for the two little ligers, a dog who had recently had its own puppies came to their rescue. After some initial problems, the two liger cubs are now feeding well from their canine stepmother and getting stronger (and bigger!).
