Austrian Man Stumbles Upon Treasure In Back Garden

From Will on Monday 6th June 2011

Man turning dirt in back yard has stumbled onto a hoard of buried treasure, described by authorities as a fairy-tale find.

The find, of more than 200 rings, brooches, ornate belt buckles, gold and silver plates, and other pieces or fragments, many encrusted with pearls, fossilised coral, and other ornaments, are roughly dated at around 650 years old.

“Fairy tales do exist!” a statement from the Federal Office for Memorials said.

Another statement read, “Private individual finds sensational treasure in garden”, describing the find as “one of the qualitatively most significant discoveries of medieval treasure in Austria.”

Little is known of the man who found the treasure, but reports claim that he originally found the hoard in 2007, but did not realize the significance of it until he was moving house recently, and rediscovered the dirt encrusted objects in a box in his basement. Since the original find, the dirt had dried and fallen off, revealing precious metals and jewels underneath.

The treasures are yet to be valued but it is hoped that once they are they will be donated or loaned to one of Austria’s museums.
